The Greatness of Our God!

The Greatness of Our God
Written by Jason Ingram, Reuben Morgan, and Stuart Garrard

Verse 1:
Give me eyes to see more of who You are
May what I behold still my anxious heart.
Take what I have known, and break it all apart
Cause You my God are greater still

Chorus 1:
No sky contains,
No doubt restrains
All You are
The greatness of our God
I spend my life to know
And I’m far from close to all You are
The greatness of our God

Verse 2:
Give me grace to see beyond this moment here.
To believe that there is nothing left to fear.
And that You alone are high above it all
For You, my God, are greater still.

Bridge:
And there is nothing that can ever separate us.
There is nothing that can ever separate us from Your love.
No life, No death. Of this I am convinced
That You, my God, are greater still.

Chorus 2:
And no words can say, or song convey
All You are
The greatness of our God
I spend my life to know
And I’m far from close to all You are
The greatness of our God.

We’re doing this song for the first time this Sunday, September 11, and I wanted to share some thoughts I have on the song. First of all, the lyrics are just rich with texture and imagery of who our God is. It truly thrills my heart to be able to sing a song with so much depth and meaning.

A few lines really resonate with me:

Take what I have known, and break it all apart
Cause You my God are greater still

We really strive to know the Person of the real, true Jesus Christ, so what if what we’ve known of Him, perhaps from our particular church denomination, needs to be broken all apart? I’ve experienced this is a HUGE way in my own life, and it’s tough but so worth the transformation.

No sky contains,
No doubt restrains
All You are
The greatness of our God

I relate to characters in the Bible like Thomas, and personally, I think poor Thomas gets a bad rap. If you’d like to read the story of Thomas, you can check it out in John 20:24-29. I think it’s amazing that this story was important enough to include in Scripture. There must be something there God wants to say to us, right? Even if we have doubt, it doesn’t restrain who He is; the greatness of who He is! It also doesn’t change how much He loves us! As a matter of fact, I’ve learned to take my doubts directly to Him; to ask Him the hard questions that we maybe try to skirt around in church. Guess what! He hears what I’m saying, and He reveals more of Himself to me through my honest, open questions.

And no words can say, or song convey
All You are
The greatness of our God

I know these lyrics to be powerfully true. I absolutely love to write. I didn’t posses this gift earlier in life, but now it seems like songs just pour out of me at times. Glory be to God for that! There have been many times when I’ve felt like the English language left a lot to be desired in trying to describe Him adequately and honestly. How do you come up with the right adjectives for a righteous, holy, just, powerful, and magnificent God? It isn’t possible. We can do our very best (and God honors that), but I always leave a writing session feeling like maybe I didn’t adequately describe what He wanted me to convey.

That’s a few points in a nutshell. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please take some time to digest these words. Spend some time with this song this week before Sunday, and come with your hearts ready to explode with complete adoration for God!!
